Making a Future for Our Industry…
It is no surprise that Sunday’s fourth Education Summit for Graphic Communications (hosted by the Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation and sponsored by GASC and NPES) was a standing-room-only hit. Event leader John Berthelsen, President of Suttle-Strauss, Inc. and Chairman of the Education Summit Committee, and NAPL’s own Raymond J. Prince led a panel of industry figures in a discussion about getting the best available talent, helping to ensure the future of print.
In a huge step forward for our industry, the Education Summit Committee got the Bureau of Labor and Statistics to update its’ much-antiquated Industry Classification System. Also, the industry website GraphicCommCentral click here for link to site underwent a total re-vamp and looks wonderful. Perhaps the main topic for consideration however, was generating interest among youth and helping them realize how captivating the print industry really is. The audience had a number of interesting suggestions and thought-provoking comments on how to procure qualified talent. Attendees also got to hear fromFerris State University student Amela Mujkic who shared with the audience her love for the industry and its’ ever-evolving qualities.
On the whole, our industry needs to keep the future at the forefront of its’ mind. By taking a proactive approach and re-evaluating our methods of securing new and talented workers, we have a wonderful future to look forward to.
