Manage Your Bench

You might love to have every position in your company filled with an 'A' level player. The reality though is that you probably have a mix of 'A', 'A-Potential', 'B' and 'C' employees. That's life I guess and maybe not as bad as there are logical roles for everyone within the organization.

A couple of thoughts on this:

  1. Do the best that you can to have 'A' or 'A-Potential' folks in your key positions. Make sure that people are in the right roles to help make your company perform to its fullest potential.
  2. Spend most of your coaching time with the 'A' and 'A-Potential' folks. Your company will get a better return and higher productivity (and higher retention rates) from helping them with incremental improvements over time.
