New Energy Contract Saves Printer $80,000 Annually

The Issue
A sizable Northeastern NAPL member was experiencing tremendously high electric, gas, and wind renewable energy certificate (REC) rates. The member also needed to continue to use wind RECs in order to maintain its ecofriendly status and reduce its carbon footprint. Since it was interested in streamlining its business and obtaining better rates, it turned to the NAPL Energy Program experts when its energy contracts came up for renewal.
The Approach
After reviewing the member’s 2012-2013 energy bills, NAPL discovered that the “all inclusive” rate for its current electric contract was not truly “all inclusive” as it had “pass through” fees which drove up the fixed rate. During the due diligence process, NAPL informed this member of a capacity increase set to impact the eastern United States, which would ultimately drive up prices tremendously. Knowing that energy costs would be increasing when winter months approached, NAPL carefully monitored the energy market waiting for a significant decrease in rates.
The Recommendation
When NAPL experts saw a drastic decrease, they set up a bidding process for the member’s energy contracts and received multiple energy and wind REC quotes on the member’s behalf. Once all of the quotes were in, NAPL analyzed them to guarantee that the member would get the best possible “all inclusive” rate. After the analysis was completed, NAPL informed the member of the best suppliers and contract rates and recommended that it sign an energy contract on that day to lock in an historically low rate, instead of waiting for its current contract to expire.
The Result
After reviewing the information presented by NAPL, the member agreed that it was in the company’s best interest to change suppliers immediately and signed the new energy contract that day. Days after the contract was signed, the energy market shifted and rates quickly skyrocketed. As a result of taking advantage of the member benefit NAPL Energy Program by sending NAPL its two most recent energy bills for a complimentary analysis, this member company was able to sign lower “all inclusive” electric and natural gas commodity contracts and save an astonishing $80,000.00 on its wind RECs.
The Resources
As a member benefit, NAPL’s Energy Program is available to assist all AMSP/NAPL/NAQP members gain a better understanding of their energy rates and contracts and an awareness of the most cost-effective energy options available to them. For information, email Aslaninko@napl.org or fax your two most recent energy bills to (201) 634-0324 for a complimentary energy analysis.
